My path to becoming a psychologist has definitely not been a straight line; more like a scenic route with bonus side quests. I started out studying Psychology and Indonesian, then took a deep dive into a PhD on Specific Learning Disorders (dyslexia), which included fieldwork in Papua New Guinea.

Before becoming a psychologist, I spent years as a primary school teacher and Specialist Learning Support Teacher, working with autistic and ADHD young people, gifted learners, and kids who prefer to learn in their own wonderfully unconventional ways. I have lectured at the ANU in cognitive and neuropsychology, presented emotional regulation programs across ACT schools with MIEACT, and provides in-house training for other clinicians.

I’m all about neuro-affirming, culturally aware, and child-centered practice. My approach is collaborative, strengths-focused approach. I use humour, creative and artistic expression, as well as playful therapeutic tools to make therapy feel accessible and safe. I draw from Child Centered Play therapy, ACT, DBT and CBT in my sessions.

More About Sarah:

I was born in Darwin and grew up in Canberra. I have spent 7 years living overseas as an adult, splitting my time between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. I love travel and enjoy exploring the world, learning new languages and challenging myself to do new things.

I have a passion for learning. I love it when this takes the form of practical learning, through trying new things and going places I haven't been before. It can also be satisfied through deep academic study. Its not unusual to find me reading journal articles for fun.

Sadly, my hobbies are mostly theoretical at the moment, but I love being outdoors and following creative pursuits. In my fantasy version of life, I would spend the day reading, painting, and playing music, or adventuring in the outdoors with my husband, son, and our extremely dramatic Groodle.

Three words that describe Sarah: Passionate, creative, nerdy

Spirit Animal: Groodle

Favourite Game: Usually anything to do with Lego

Something people wouldn’t guess about you: I used to sing in a jazz band and a folk rock band.
